Fun and easy walk with dog and 9yo. Did not go all the way to the top because of the dog since there is a bit of climbing there.

This a truly great walk, we recommend using sticks and good shoes. It's worth checking the weather forecast, you'll be rewarded with great view and a much more enjoyable stay at the top. The peeks have great colors (...
Very nice waterfall. 0 turists. Track to this place is almost invisible. Not many people going in this direction. Some trail was technically difficult, but if you are basically fit, you should do the trick.
Easy and slow walk to the socalled Rock. Loads of people on Mt. Esja as usual. Weather was ok, foggy and snowing for a bit, but then in cleared and we could see towards Reykjavik
A great hint to help you choose your outdoor gear and clothing!

Great hike! But hard work for such a short distance. Esja is a tough mountain, it's either steep or difficult terrain (even on the plateau). There's no easy way up, it's work in any case. Today's route up over Steinn is ...
This area near the capital is seldom visited. Interesting views. Lots of remains of human activities through the ages. One for the bird lovers.
Borderline 'Gluggaveđur' today (-5C with cold northern wind). Boring first 30min on the road then steep incline up SW face onto slowly rising plateau towards Grímansfell summit. Great views all around as far as Þingvelli...
Most part after the waterfall no trail. Best view on waterfall from this side of the river. Passing ruins of an old dam or something. You can just walk back the same way from the waterfall or continue over the mountain...
Nice and easy trail, a few steps from Reykjavik. No problems parking the car. Wonderful valley down beneath Selfjall. Note that this is a winter track in snow. I got good weather in the beginning, sun and good view, espe...
Esja is hard work, however you approach it. Today's hike started ascending Móskarðshnúkar which is unpleasantly steep for 2km, then fun but still steep with great views at the top. From there I took the Westwards path al...
Cold day (0C) but no wind. South ascent and Northwest descent easy. Northern ascent steeper and Western descent tricky (steep portion above trees with heavy ice. The Western ascent was fun and the final descent too. Grea...
Steinn winter version, not always on track. Snowblind and blizzard at top, and lot of snow over 400m.
Start along the water, can make it a bit longer by following the path and not the road at 1/3. Last bit there is a path following the water back to the parking.
(n.b. elevation gain circa + 1000m) The stats might look easy, but a hard hike due to the terrain (and on the day, wind). A mix of loose gravel on steep slopes and moss + rock on the tops made for slow progress (as show...
Small loop beneath Esja's summit. Snow on the ground and up to 10cm deep in places. Slow and steady climb up into nice shaded valley, then a left turn West to Steinn. Steepish descent in parts with good views of Reykjavi...
Evening hike in late April. The hike is relatively easy. After crossing the bridge the trail started to become very muddy. Awesome 360 view at the top of Stórhóll.
Nice view and fun trip. the end tho is bit risky following the road it had almost 45°slop down, specaly with the snow
Esja - hiking up to Steinn. Snowstorm and low clouds makes very difficult to hiking in to higher parts of this mountain.
Easy walk up, a bit steep sometimes. At the very top, take the right path up. It looks steeper but there is a rope that will help. We went down on the north side of the plateau. Maybe not easier but still OK.
This trail starts and ends close to the farm Stardalur. It leads to a beautiful waterfall in the river Leirvogsá. The trail is optimal for a short hike close to the city. Despite it's proximity to the city, not many peop...
Diffrent way to hike upp to Steinn just under the peak "Þverfellshorn" Great veiw from Búrfellshamar over the city and to the sea.
Nice hike to the top of Mount Esja, well signed. At Stein you can climb to the top, a bit technical, but if you're up for it, worth it on a clear day. Large parking lot at the bottom and a bus stop as well.
Josepsdalur loop attempt #2. Great hike, the terrain underfoot can be a challenge: loose stones and rock on the steepest parts with soft and sandy areas at the summit. Great views and next step would be to loop round Jos...
Nice and easy walk - good circular track. We had EXTREMELY high winds and had to hold hands on the top most half of the way down less our kid would carried of by the wind - it was wild and fun. With no or less wind a wa...
