Born in Eindhoven in the Netherlands in 1946, Wouter Schreuders developed a serious crush on Mother Nature early on in his life. In 1963 he emigrated to South Africa to "study" her work at close hand and become a “Wildlife Vet”, or a “Game Ranger”. Not that the concepts really existed in those days. He attended Merensky Agricultural High School near Tzaneen. During a short spell in the construction industry, he obtained his MBA after hours at Pretoria University. He then worked for the IDC and the DBSA, both development institutions. His membership of the Mountain Club of South Africa in the seventies fuelled his interest in rock climbing, hiking and general outdoor activities and became his passion. In 1984 he "diversified" from Banking into cattle farming on a part time basis in the Lowveld near Hoedspruit and Gravelotte. In 1986 his Father-in-Law joined him, and they moved closer to home with a small farm in the Waterberg. The gradual transition from cattle farming to game farming happened in tandem with a general tendency, especially around Thabazimbi and to the North in The Waterberg a then, still an undiscovered gem on Gauteng's doorstep. With assistance from Professor Hugo from Pretoria University’s Geology department and Sarie Mehl Stamvrug Hiking Trails developed into one of the most popular trailing destination in private hands. Sarie started Jacana Booking Agency with a focus on hiking and biking trails. The first hiking trails under the name Stamvrug Hiking Trails took shape and the rest is hiking history.
