In the city, I turn left or right whenever the traffic lights are red for me. I usually end-up "almost" lost but always find my way back and always discover something new along the route.
As for Shanghai where I am residing, I walked the streets during all seasons, day and night, but best time is 6.00 to 8.00am during the week and extended to 11.00am on week end.

In the countryside, I rely on a map and a compass, plus following well marked trails have always been a good bet.
