The island of Korcula is one of the greenest islands in the Adriatic Sea, abundant with vineyards and olive trees.
Its southern coast is made up of small beaches and quiet caves. The Greeks called it Korkyra, Melaina or "black Corfu", all adjectives to define its wooded appearance.
Korcula is located about 20 km away. from the coast, between Makarska and Ploce, and in the southern part we will find small beaches, more than 200 coves and caves.
Its area is 279 km2. Currently about 3000 people live there.
It was originally built on a 3 hectare islet and the entire city was built around the main street. This place maintains the essence of a merchant town, with its mix of culture and its walls that remind us of Dubrovnik.
Korkula is linked to medieval struggles, which is why tradition preserves the chivalric dances that are celebrated throughout the island. In addition, the Moreska dance is still staged here, a show that if you have the opportunity to see it will dazzle you, on July 29, the feast of Saint Theodore.
The town of Korkula appears like a typical medieval Dalmatian village, with red defense towers and motley houses with colorful roofs.
They say that Marco Polo (1254 – 1324), the stubborn traveler who reached China and Mongolia, was born here. And in fact its museum is one of the many cultural centers visited in Korkula.
The monument par excellence is the Cathedral of San Marcos, made by the stonemasons who took about 150 years to complete it. It is located in the town that gives its name to the island, to the east of it.
During the Italian rule of Venice that lasted three centuries, Korcula became famous for the work of the stonemasons who exported the carved stone to other places, but this Venetian influence is also perceived in the interior of the Cathedral as it houses two paintings by Tintoretto .
To the left of the cathedral we find the Church of San Pedro of Gothic architecture with a Renaissance façade, following the street we find the supposed house of Marco Polo
Another place of interest is The Abbey Palace and the Palace.
