    섬진강은 길이 212km로 규모로는 4대강에 들지만 유역 인구가 적고 수해가 드문 산간지대를 흘러 언제나 맑고 친근하다. 2013년에 섬진강 자전거길 148km가 개통되었다. 기존의 강변 도로와 제방을 최대한 이용해서 주변 경관이 자연스럽다.
