Itinerary description
Beautiful and relax tour along the center of the island, reaching the 5th highest mountain of the Iberian Peninsula and the 2th highest in the island, Pico Areeiro.
This old road is one of my favorite ones to access the north side.
High point: Monte gardens and its church. Carreiros do Monte.
Casa de abrigo do Poiso, a most do kind of stop for a worm drink ( cortado) or/and a drink to worm up ( poncha) :)
The peack, Ribeiro Frio ( here you can either worm up with another poncha or by walking a short but delightful little hike to one of the most breathe taking viewpoints of Madeira, Balcões.
From here you enjoy the scenery until Santana were I end up at “Colmo” to enjoy a local soup.
In Santana look for “Rocha do Navio” views point over a waterfall and the only natural monument of Madeira, and also “Queimadas” a picturesque Jurassic kind of place. Just seeing to believe it!
The way back to the south of the island you can access the fast road from Santana back to Funchal.
Have fun!
Drive carefully.
