Itinerary description

The Carrauntoohill is the highest peak in Ireland. In spite of its low altitude, its ascent by the normal route is not trivial, since it is necessary to overcome a very uncomfortable stony channel and, in addition, the time is usually bad, with fog and wind.
The starting point is the Cronin's Yard Camping, a small camping that has some service. From the parking lot (you have to pay one euro depositing it in a kind of piggy bank ...) we go through a small track in the direction of the main valley. We cross the different torrents that come down from Carrauntoohill twice by two bridges and once again over some stones that facilitate the crossing.
The path leaves the bottom of the valley and rises slightly until we find another track, wider, where our path ends. We continue through the well marked valley until we reach the shore of Lake Lough Callee. On the right there is a second lake and our path climbs up a back that looks like an old moraine until we reach the base of a marked channel.
The channel is the key step of the ascension. It climbs steeply and is covered with blocks of stone. It is what the Irish call Devil's Lader, something like "the ladder of the Devil". An authentic adventure for people unaccustomed to the mountains. Almost without a path, climbing the blocks, we gain altitude, about 300 meters, until we reach a small hill, a gap, located about 740 m.
From the hill the land has no difficulty; you just have to follow the well-marked path that leads to the summit. However, it is not always easy because this final spine is often hit by strong winds that make it difficult and even dangerous, although the spine is wide and the road runs away from the steep slopes that fall on the lakes.
Finally we reached the summit of Carrauntoohill (1,039 m), the highlight of Ireland. From the summit you can see an extensive panorama in the few days of good weather that are enjoyed in these latitudes. We did not see more than fog although the climb was worth it.
The descent is by the same climb path (the track only contains the climb).
