Itinerary description
The Salkantay Sky Domes is the premium version of the classic Salkantay and is also done in 4 days. Instead of sleeping in camping, you sleep in the Sky Camp in Soraypampa, in glass igloos.
The route of the first day is 10 kilometers long and starts at 3800 meters of altitude. The starting point is Challancha, which is usually reached by car from Cusco. From here the hike is to Soraypampa. During this stretch you will be able to see the Humantay Lagoon, very famous in the area.
The second day is harder (22km) and you reach the highest point of the trek, the Salkantay Pass at 4,600 meters altitude. The route continues with a 5km descent to Huayracmachay and then 10km through a semi-tropical forest. This section ends in Chaullay.
The route of the third day is a little longer than the previous one, 27 kilometers, but easier because it is flatter. The first point of the trek is the village of La Playa which is reached by crossing the Santa Teresa Valley and the village of Colpapampa. Then they take you by transport to Hidroeléctica to follow the route from there, which is a 3 hour hike following the train line until you reach Aguas Calientes.
The last day is the arrival to Machu Picchu, where going with a guide, you will have a guided tour of 2 hours but then you can see everything on your own. To finish, you can reach Aguas Calientes again on foot or by bus. The trekking part ends here, but then you will go by train to Ollantaytambo and from there you will take a minibus to Cusco where the tour will end.
