Romania. Transfăgărășan. Lake Bàlea going down. Doamnei Lake
The Transfăgărășan is the second highest paved highway in Romania. Built as a strategic military route, the 90 kilometers of curves run from north to south through the highest sections of the southern Carpathians, between the highest peak in the country, Moldoveanu, and the second highest, Negoiu. The highway connects the historical regions of Transylvania and Wallachia, and the cities of Sibiu and Piteşti.
The road reaches 2034 meters of altitude. Due to the topography, the average speed is around 40 km/h. The road gives access to Lake Bâlea and the Balneario de Bâlea.
The road is normally closed from the end of October to the end of June due to snow. This road has more tunnels (a total of 5) and bridges than any other road in Romania. Near the highest point, at Lake Bâlea, the road passes through the longest tunnel in Romania (884 m), which does not have artificial lighting.
Among the attractions that can be found on the southern section of the road, near the village of Arefu, is the Poenari Castle. This castle served as the residence for Vlad III the Impaler, who was the prince who inspired Bram Stoker the protagonist of his novel Dracula. There is a parking area and a path to the ruins.
Route through the Carpathians in the Transfagaran area in Transylvania. We are going to do the route almost entirely downhill. For this we will take the cable car. We take this on the road that goes down from the port in the direction of Sibiu in one of its innumerable curves. It takes us to the top of the port, where Lake Bálea is located.
We arrive at the port car park, from the cable car passing by the beautiful Bálea Lake. The path, well signposted, zig-zags until it reaches the pass.
From the pass, what we have left will be all downhill, about 1000 meters of unevenness. At this pass we have a crossroads of paths, we will take to the right downhill towards Valea Doamnei. The views from this place are truly incredible.
We go down following the signs of the red cross with a white background. We see the bottom of the valley, Lake Doamnei, as the name of the valley that we are going to go through.
The path goes into a fir forest. We continue to follow the marks. We are glued to the banks of the Valea Doamnei river. We come to a crossroads with another trail, which crosses the river. We continue along the same shore.
The path moves away from the riverbed, gaining a little height to go around the slope along which we will descend to the new valley of the Bálea river. We meet again with another path that comes from our right. This comes from the top of the port but goes down the valley of the Bálea River. A footbridge helps us to cross the river.
Crossing the river, we continue down towards the Gondola lift, where we will be joined by the path that comes from the Balea Waterfall.
