It is a glacial lake located at 2,034 m altitude in the Făgăraș Mountains, in central Romania, in Cârțișoara, Sibiu County.
It is accessible by car via the Transfăgărășan highway during the summer, and the rest of the year by a cable car from the chalet "Bâlea Cascadă".
The glacial lake was formed when a glacier eroded the mountains and melted, leaving behind one of the most beautiful lakes in Romania. The name Bâlea Lake comes from a local legend, a story of the shepherd Bâlea, who was in the mountains with his sheep when a bear attacked them. He fought the bear and managed to defeat it, chasing it into the forest. When the king heard of Bâlea's bravery, he invited him to join his royal guard at the castle, where he fell in love with the king's daughter. They decided to get married, but on their wedding day, a huge storm took over their lives. The locals baptized the lake with the name of the brave shepherd.
THE ROUTE:
We start from the vicinity of the lake, the route is always along mountain trails and alpine meadows in a unique environment.
We begin the ascent to the pass at 2180 m. During the ascent and from the pass, we will be able to see the magnificent views of the lake. Already in the pass, we have the option of raising Mt. Paltinu that offers us a magnificent panoramic view of other slopes.
From the top and along the same path we return to the pass to begin the descent through the "Domnei Vallei". Through paths through alpine meadows and following the course of the river, we will arrive at a beautiful path that enters a magical forest of conifers, mosses and lichens, which takes us very close to the waterfall of the same name.
