Romania. Lake Balea. Capra Lake. Capra Peak
Lake Bâlea is a glacial lake located at an altitude of 2,034 m, in the Făgăraș Mountains, Sibiu County. The dimensions of the lake are: 360 m long and 11.35 m deep. In 1932, Lake Bâlea and an area of about 180 ha around the lake were declared a nature reserve.
During the summer it can be reached by car, via the Transfăgărășan highway, and the rest of the time by cable car, from the Bâlea Cascadă chalet, near the Bâlea waterfall. In the Făgăraș mountains there are also lakes Capra, Podrăgel, Podragu, Avrig, Urlea, etc.
In 2006, near Lake Bâlea, the first ice hotel in Eastern Europe was built in the form of a 16-seater igloo. It is built every year, during the winter, between January and March, from the blocks of ice extracted from Lake Bâlea.
Lake Capra is a glacial lake on the southern slopes of the Făgăraș massif, at an altitude of 2,230 m. The Capra stream, one of the Argeș springs, is born from here.
The Transfăgărășan highway is the second highest paved highway in Romania. Built as a strategic military route. The 90 kilometers of curves run from north to south through the highest sections of the southern Carpathians, between the highest peak in the country, Moldoveanu, and the second highest, Negoiu. The highway connects the historical regions of Transylvania and Wallachia, and the cities of Sibiu and Piteşti.
The road reaches 2034 meters of altitude. The Transfăgărăşan is an attractive road and a challenge for all types of drivers. Due to the topography, the average speed is around 40 km/h. The road gives access to Lake Bâlea and the Balneario de Bâlea.
The route begins at the parking lot next to Lake Bâlea, from where you have a magnificent view of the Transfăgărășan road and the valley.
The ascent is along a well-signposted path (white triangle with blue inside) towards the pass. The slope is demanding with rocks, which make progress difficult and force us to make some small climbs. At the Saua Caprei pass we have splendid views of the valley and Lake Capra.
The path narrows and becomes somewhat aerial, although with impressive views of the surroundings. The path leads us to the Arefu pass, from which you can climb Vânătarea lui Buteanu (2,507m.).
In our case we continue towards the Capra of 2,494 m. Contemplating the views, we return along the same path to the starting point of the route.
