Romania. Fereastra Zmeilor. Arsapul Mare and Mercii peaks. Cabana Podragu

We arrive at the beginning of the route, in one of the curves of the Transfăgărășan highway, a little above Cabana Capra and the Capra waterfall.

The route ascends Parallel to the Barranco Coprei on the left bank. Further on, it crosses the ravine and progresses its ascent to the right. Later we skirt the Fundu Caprei Caldera and pass near the Fereastra Zmeilor Refuge.

The ascending path crosses the Vest Caldera and reaches Fereastra Zmeilor, the Dragon's Window. The path, now along the ridge, reaches La Tri Pasi de Moarte. After crossing the pass, the path descends towards Monumental Meringer, bordering the Caldurusa Fruntii.

The path continues along the crest and passes Paru de Fier at 2,316 m. It borders the Arpasu Mare at 2,468 m and reaches the peak of Mircii at 2,470 m.

A slight descent takes us to Lacul Padu Giurgiului with its small refuge. Continue a slight descent to the Saua Podranguui pass. A left turn takes us along a descending path to the Cabana Podragu refuge, very close to Lacul Podragu.

Podragu Chalet is located in the Făgăraș mountains, in the Podragului valley, at an altitude of 2136 m. In 1885, the Transylvanian Carpathian Society of Sibiu built a stone shelter on Lake Podragu, which soon fell into disrepair.

In 1937-1939, the Romanian Turing Club decided to build a tourist lodge on Lake Podragu, for which it leased the necessary land from the inhabitants of the Ucea de Sus commune. The hut was completed in Tălmaciu and later transported in pieces and assembled at the established location. At the same time, TCR started the development of the road leading from Valea Podragului to the lake, but the association abandoned the original project and transported the hut near the Suru peak, setting it up at the place called "Fruntea Moașei".

The current Podragu hut was built in 1948-1949 by the National Bank, for its employees, and was put into use in 1950. Later, the hut came into the hands of the Central Council of Trade Unions and was used as a tourist hut, as in the present.
