Itinerary description

Thanks to the efforts of the hiking club of Pogoni (φυσιολατρικος όμιλος Πωγωνιου) based in Delvinaki, Northwestern Greece we are able to enjoy the formerly disused path connecting the villages of Palaiokastro with Oraiokastro. We descend from the village of Palaiokastro to the traditional bridge of Gretsi. The Gretsi bridge is a masterpiece of popular architectural art. It is build after 1830 above a secondary river of Gormos river. Nearby there is a watermill. The beauty of the bridge is stunning! We continue southwards along a well marked path leading eventually to the Reservoir of Moraitis. The ascending path is through a pit called Lakies or Scabeto. The summit of Koutsokrano (1325 m.) is just above the Reservoir. From the summit of Koutsokrano we could enjoy the view of Nemertska mountain (the summit is located inside Albania) Timfi or Gamila mountain, Makrikampos and Grammos mountain. We continue along the path and we soon join a dirtroad leading to the village of Delvinaki. The best seasons for walking the path is spring and autumn. To complete the course of 15.75 klm you need six hours. It is described as a four hour walk by the local hiking club but this information is proved to be wrong. Moving average is 3,6 klm per hour. Degree of difficulty is B+. This is a remote area and it should be attempted only by experienced hikers we are aware of the Greek and Balkan nature.
