So was this place worth the hike? Never been there and looking to get out to scenic forestry hiking trails. Thanks in advance.
A lot plays into whether something is worth it. For me, this was a quiet place with few people, and an interesting mix of wild grasses, hayed fields, and woods. There was also a small pond. I enjoyed the back and forth the trail took between the variations, some areas open up...other more closed with cover...some areas heavily influenced by man, other areas very natural. If I remember correctly, the woods to the east are a lot of bur oaks...though, I'm no expert in forestry. While I wouldn't consider it a premiere trail for scenic forestry hikes, I found the location to certainly be worth a visit!
Awesome! Thanks for responding. It sounds nice. If you can think of any other places with natural covered forest that would be swell.
As a kid, I used to go hike at platte river state park and loved the covered forest trails their and the look out towers. Problem now is that's the only place I can think to hike at. Well and mahoney or down at dodge park or Hummel park but they are such short trails. Thanks a bunch for the advise.
I'm happy to respond. Very few comments come from this platform! If you browse my trails, have a look at the following:
Of primary interest may be Hitchcock Nature Center near Cresent Iowa. This is a great place to hike with numerous options for trails and difficulties. In addition, I'd also check out Schramm State Park (heavily covered trails), West Oak Forest, and Pony Creek Conservation Area. All of these exhibit some of what you describe for covered forest trails, West Oak Forest being perhaps the most quiet of the three where it comes to visitors. There quite a bit of elevation change which could be challenging to certain individuals, but if that is not a concern, a great place to hike a trail of a decent length.
