Itinerary description
Estimate: 23km, +1700m, -1700m
This estimate is probably more realistic than the altitude components measured by my smartphone GPS.
Please find the tracks of the other days by searching Wikiloc for "Madeira Feb2016" or in my own comment below (you will see it in the classical PC view, not in the mobile view).
Start 8:35. End 18:10. Swift walking with few breaks, to return before sunset.
A trail with great views. On my 7-day tour, this was my only round trip. It is the day with the hardest elevation gain. So I was happy to walk with a lighter backpack, as I left some kilos in the hotel room.
Most of this track follows Madeira's hiking trail PR1.3. At www.visitmadeira.pt you can see the actual status of that trail at "Useful info > Walks > Notice ... List ...".
Km -0.1 to 1.2. Walking on the road
Km 1.2 to 10.8. This section starts at Boca da Encumeada (signpost PR1.3) and ends at the intersection between Pico Ruivo and the mountain hut we see close ahead when we are at km 10.8 (no overnight stays in the hut). On this section, the only people I met were two young guys with heavy backpacks who had camped near Pico Ruivo. On my 7-day tour, these were the only hikers I met that looked like doing several days of trekking.
Km 3.4, waypoint. Spring.
Km 10.8 to 11.1. Peak region of the Pico Ruivo. There were many people there on that sunny Tuesday.
Km 11.1 to 22.6. Back on the same way. Once I left the peak region, I didn't meet anybody until I was back on the road.
