Itinerary description

The Kaumana Trail is a short segment of a pre-industrial commerce trail that stretched across the inland of Hawaii Island. It was built with care and marked with cairns, and probably last used commercially in the 19th century. This portion of it has been cleared for hiking. It is the east-west portion of the track shown. The north-south portion is an ad-hoc primitive trail, marked with bits of flag tape (an orange bit visible in the first photo, for example) that branches off the Kaumana Trail and plunges into a dense cool rainforest. The deeper I went the less traveled the trail was, and eventually I lost it where I could find no more bits of flag tape. It is a rugged track, best followed with a GPS, but well worth getting 'off the beaten path.'
