Itinerary description

This Wikiloc was recorded on a hot day during the summer of 2015. A subsequent Wikiloc, following the same route and extending a bit higher, was done in early November 2018 during much cooler weather. There is a completely different experience when comparing these summmer and late autumn climbs.

Access is by car or taxi to base of trail. It may be hard to get taxi after returning down to the road, however the track follows the road downhill to the nearest local bus stop, where a bus can be caught back into Kaifaqu.

The trail passes a lower temple complex where a small admission was payable. From there it's a steady climb, with some steeper staircase sections. The lower part follows a shaded stream. We turned back after visiting the Upper Temple Complex. However, hiking trails continue higher, to the peak of Big Black Mountain.

See picture at starting waypoint for the full English description.

Lower Temple

There is a gift shop, active temple, monks, chanting, free access. A tout may be encountered on trail nearby, will expect $ for a prayer blessing. Probably not endorsed by temple.

Catch Local Bus back to Kaifaqu

We had a taxi dropoff at start, and no taxis seen when we got back to the road. We walked south along road to the start of the village, where busses pass. No problem catching a local bus into downtown Kaifaqu.
