Itinerary description
Salkantay hike done in 4 days and overnighting in local accommodations (no tent).
Day 1: Cusco - Soraypampa 3800 m - Humantaycocha 4260 m - 5 km
In order to get to Soraypampa, I booked a coletivo ride for 45 soles. Many tour agencies offer coletivos from Cusco to Soraypampa where tourists do a day visit to Humantay lake. Go to Av. Arcopata in Cusco and you will find many agency offices. On this day, we stayed overnight in Soraypampa Hostel (booked via booking).
Day 2: Soraypampa - Salkantay pass 4640 m - Chaullay 2870 m - 21 km
After ascending the Salkantay pass, the trail goes far down until Chaullay, where my second day ended. Overnight in Salkantay Hostel.
Day 3: Chaullay - Llactapata 2590 m - 26 km
In order to save some time, I decided to take a coletivo from Chaullay to Lucmabamba, where I start the climb to Llactapata in the Inca trail. This transport cost 40 soles, and it was offered by the Salkantay Hostel host. If you decide to hike all the way, I suggest starting early, it’s a long walk. The Machu Picchu sight from Llactapata is amazing! Great place to stay overnight. Stayed in Llactapata Lodge.
Day 4: Llactapata - Hidreletrica - Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes) 2050 m - 14 km
On this day, I walked down Llactapata until Hidreletrica, where the trail goes through the railway, it’s an enjoyable walk to Machu Picchu pueblo, surrounded by the jungle and mountains.
