Data dump. The AT has been re-routed in this area since this 5 year old hike.
Yes, this is part of a comprehensive 'data dump' for the purposes of documentation, because EveryTrail and their successor All Trails doesn't work for this purpose. Indeed, the AT has been rerouted coming up from Pearisburg to Peters Mountain. The tracks I put on Wikiloc are where I walked. They are not intended to describe official or even recommended routes unless I say otherwise.
The point of these downloads is to help others who might want to hike the trails in the future. Dumping old data that is no longer relevant doesn't serve this purpose, and neither does adding data that covers areas that have already been included on the site and were recorded more recently. Most of these AT routes are older than what is already there, so it just becomes noise to someone trying to obtain data in advance of a hike. It may be great for your own purposes, but it doesn't help the average Wikiloc user.
This is especially the case when the data are uploaded without an explanation that the route is no longer active - something you clearly knew.
I appreciate and respect your point of view, bennington200. You view Wikiloc as basically a P2P file sharing site that is specifically for GPS tracks. But it also invites photos and descriptions - a capability targeted to people who want to 'blog' about their experiences. Each track has both a 'Download' button and a 'Share' button. You are emphasizing the 'download' aspect. I'm here to 'share' where I've hiked with those who may never have the opportunity or interest or ability to hike the places/trails where I've been.
I have a very specific and targeted reason for uploading the older tracks. I've grouped all of them into a single group with a descriptive title that represents that they are documentation of my progress toward a long-term personal goal. Apparently Wikiloc doesn't adequately alert the user to this distinction. Once I've uploaded all the old tracks I will only be adding new, current ones. I ask you and others who may encounter my data for your patience and understanding.
