We started climbing the 800 meters of unevenness of the Vrsic pass, with very hard sections, zigzagging through the forest. It is a highway of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with 24 horseshoe curves on the rise and 26 on the descent, built by Russian prisoners to supply the Italian front during the First World War. Dozens of prisoners died in avalanches of snow. That is why they built a Russian hermitage in the fourth kilometer of the climb.
The descent is very long, first to Trenta and then smoother to Bovec and Kobarid / Caporetto, the scene of one of the most terrible fronts of the First World War. It is worth visiting the museum and taking the 5 or 7 km walking path in the surroundings to see the trenches, the Italian ossuary and other remains.
