Itinerary description
The sign at the Pub in the Bayehon Valley is pretty clear. Unfortunately, we met the pub early on our tour, and just took a sip from our water bottle. If we wouldn't have done so, we could have been in trouble at the hard ascent from Beverce to the highest point of Belgium, at the Signal de Botrange.
From Kalterherberg we went the easy route, via the Ravel, to Sourbrodt and on to the Ovivat Ski slope. Earlier, we just took the slope down into the Bayehon valley - now we took the forest trails, and it was as much fun. The trail goes deep into the valley. There are four fords to cross - at the water level in summer, you can do it (but you don't have to do it, as all have bridges, too).
From Beverce the frightening steep ascent begins, first to the restaurants at Ferme Libert. Here we took a rest - but don't be fooled, the ascent continues. Check out the elevation diagram to figure out the steepness of the ascent. If you didn't come with an e-bike, here you will regret you didn't.
From the top, continue - still going uphill - but more relaxed - close to Signal de Botrange. Visit it, if you haven't done already, at a different time. Otherwise, cross the road, and continue along and into the Venn. Until recently (2019), this was a mere hiker's trail, prone to flooding and mud. Now it is gravel - in a few years it even may be a comfortable ride.
Once on the other side of the Venn, turn right and take your choice of forest roads back to Küchelscheid and, eventually, Kalterherberg.
