In July 2006 with Marco, Oscar and Uti I completed the path that
we had set ourselves from Alaska to Yukon by bike. The departure came from Fairbanks and not from Anchorage as we had originally assumed. In this way it was avoided to redo the route of Denali Park, the stretch of road Cantwel-Denali Park, to take the Denali HWY. We arrived in Fairbanks after an interminable flight of more than 16 hours, good news is that for the time zone we gained 9 hours, it was Saturday, June 17th. The next day in the early afternoon, after having stocked up with provisions, we left for Deanali Park. To enter the Denali you have to book at the entrance by staring with the rangers the stopping points at the camps that are inside the park. The road inside the park, up to Wonder Lake under Mount McKinley (6193 meters), measures about 130 km, are completely unpaved, except for the first kilometers after entry, about 20 on asphalt. The dirt road is good and can be traveled only by bike or by
buses that bring tourists. The differences in height are considerable with three steps from
exceed. Vast panoramas, alternating rain showers with sun,
very clean atmosphere, met along the way the Grizzly and two wolves. Between
round trip, including a day of rest at Wonder Lake,
we spent within the park 5 days. Mandatory to Wonder
Lake, as almost everywhere, when it is still, the use of the retina for
protect yourself from mosquitoes. The campsites are very Spartan, they offer only the
tent place and a shelter where to bring food to prevent bears from you
come to visit in the tent. There are no points where to get supplies of
food, water, for the giardia, you have to filter it or boil it before
drink it. Leaving the park and arrived in Cantwel we embarked on the legendary
Denali HWY, are 220 km almost completely dirt with only one point of
support after 92 km, an airport that offers cabins where fortunately
we could stay overnight. Indeed the night and unfortunately all day
next, 105 km, there was rain and cold, bypassed a step of 1300
meters with snow. This was certainly the worst day of the whole
travel. The next day out of the tents we were greeted by one
beautiful day, breathtaking views with the glaciers of the mountains
surrounding of a dazzling white. Denali HWY ends in Paxon,
where there is only a gas pump and a kind of restaurant. From Paxon we took right the HWY 4 for Kakona and the HWY 1 towards Chistochina, passing the Wrangell-St.Elias National Park, and then, after about 300 km we arrived at Tok. Completely paved route, only some dirt road for the remake of the road surface. From Tok we took the Taylor left and then the Top of the World to point to Dawson City in Canada (see 02-Alaska-Yukon). Road for the first stretch of asphalt and then, up to Canada completely unpaved. There are a total of 334 km without practically support points, on the Top there is only one village, Chichen, very characteristic with its tiny post office. The Top always continues at altitude, about 1000 meters, in a continuous and hard ups and downs, on an excellent dirt road, up to Dawson City in the Yukon. Dawson is a town that
immediately hits its dirt roads and the utlima atmosphere
frontier that one lives. The gold rush, at the end of the nineteenth century, of Klondike,
narrated by Jack London, whose home can be visited, was held right here.
In Dawson, we granted ourselves a deserved second after Wonder Lake in Denali
rest day. We were hosted for lunch by two very kind
Italian campers, husband and wife; who offered us, after days of
crap, finally a meal worthy of the name. After the break it is
aimed at the final goal Whitehorse (see 03-Alaska-Yukon), 600 km through the Yukon in a succession of woods and lakes quite monotonous, after the spectacular views of the previous weeks. At Whitehorse we arrived, two days in advance on the program, Sunday, July 9, the day of Italy's victory at the World Cup, what the hell we missed. From Whitehorse,
capital of Yukon, where there is an excellent campsite, considering that there
remained two days free, we took the opportunity to take, with bike al
followed and reduced luggage, the White Pass train, which leads from
Canada back to Alaska, to Skagway on the In Pass Passage, which leads to the
Pacific. Path that traces the old route of the gold diggers.
After two days of relaxing strolls in Skagway and surroundings, return with the
same train to Whitehorse. From where, after packing in the cartons
our glorious bicycles, helped by Luigi Pivetta, a Friulian who lives there, how small the world is! we boarded for the long flight, Saturday 15
July, brought us home.
For those wishing to retrace our journey:
> total kilometers of the Fairbanks-Whitehorse journey were 2085;
> duration 22 days including two days of parking;
> very little support points, always get food whenever possible, provide a range of food of at least 300 km.
