Itinerary description

The Burren National Park, covering 1,800 hectares in the southeastern corner of the Burren in County Clare, draws its name from the Irish boíreann, or rocky place. But the Burren has been referred to as fertile rock, internationally famous for its landscape and unique flora.

The trailhead is located at Mullaghmore Crossroads in the heart of the Burren National Park – and a range walking trails start and finish here. From the crossroads follow the purple (and yellow) arrows along a sandy laneway known as the Green Road. The yellow arrows are for the Burren Way - a long distance walking route marked with the familiar walking man. After 1km you reach a junction with a farm laneway on your right. Here the Burren Way goes straight ahead through gates - but you turn right. Follow the purple arrows for 500m to reach a metal gate and, almost immediately, a small wooden gate on your left with a sign to a Holy Well. Turn left here. From here, the waymarking changes from the black posts to standing stone slabs. Follow them as the loop passes the Holy Well and takes you from a tree-lined path into the familiar Burren landscape.
