Itinerary description
EN: Start: main entrance Parque da Pena (Estrada da Pena, 2710-609 Sintra). Even if you do not want to visit the palaces and just for a hike you have to pay the ticket for this beautiful park. You can start the hike right from the Sintra train station, but the climb is less interesting and you will have more time for the paths in the Serra de Sintra. I advise you to take one of the means of transport that will take you directly from Sintra train station to the park entrance. If you leave Lisbon, trains run every 15 minutes from Rossio Station.
Serra de Sintra is a block of granite that forms a mountainous barrier where the rains coming from the ocean stop and that favors an exuberant vegetation, a mixture of Mediterranean, tropical and subtropical trees and shrubs. Parque da Pena has an area of 200 ha, is surrounded by a wall and has an impressive number of paths and alleys that you can explore at will. Our itinerary first connects the two highlights: the palace and Cruz Alta. After admiring from the outside and visiting the Palácio Nacional da Pena (don't miss the views from its terraces) we head to the highest point, Cruz Alta (529 m) which offers a huge panorama over the whole massif. We descend to the Valley of the Lakes and head to Castelo dos Mouros with its crenellated enclosure. From here we follow the red-yellow stripe circuit that takes us down to the historic city of Sintra where we can take advantage of the many restaurants, boutiques and visit the Palácio Real. We end the visit at the train station in Sintra, where it is very likely that it started.
