Itinerary description

EN: Start: Torre de Belém (Jardim da Torre de Bélem,1400-038 Lisbon)

This walk is one of a series that wants to help tourists discover the most famous and the most important tourist places in the Portuguese capital. We start this walk at the Belém Tower, a real architectural gem, one of the symbols of the city. We continue to Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the monument dedicated to the great Portuguese discoveries. We cross the square and head to Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a monastery founded in the early 16th century, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a masterpiece of Manueline art. After visiting the church and the cloister, we can continue either with a visit to the archeological museum or with Jardim do Ultramar, a botanical garden with exotic trees brought by sailors from trips around the world. After a short stop at the Fábrica dos Pastéis de Belém, where we can taste the traditional Portuguese cake, we walk a bit through Belém and head to the banks of the Tagus River. From here we will continue most of the walk along the river bank to Praça do Comércio. Restaurants and terraces have been set up in the old docks, there are several pools for pleasure boats, but also the commercial port of the city, less interesting. We pass under the Ponte 25 de Abril and have several possibilities for breaks, either on a terrace or at a museum (for example the Museum of Arte Antiga). After saying goodbye to the river, we walk through the central area to Rossio.
