Walk around Tam Coc that runs along agricultural roads and paths that are very flat and easy to follow and that allows us to revisit some of the places we passed on the boat tour and discover small temples, pagodas and a museum of old houses.
The route starts from our accommodation and first brings us to a small temple at the foot of the road, the temple of Đền Cửa Quán, flanked by the figure of a warrior and a horse carved in stone.
We continue moving along the edge of the river where we can observe water lilies and the rock formations so characteristic of this area. We arrive at the Thai Vi temple, where we find very few visitors as it is far from the main tourist attractions of Tam Coc. We are surrounded by beautiful landscapes next to the Ngo Dong River and we can walk around the site with peace of mind. Two stone horses welcome us at the entrance. We enter the compound where we find two lotus ponds, a kind of pagoda, statues, bells, stelae... It seems that it was built in the 15th century during the great period of prosperity of Buddhism in Vietnam, under the dynasty of the Tran kings to whom he worships. In the temple there is an old man who shows us some traditional instruments and plays some melodies.
We continue to advance until we find another cult site, this time perched in a cave. It is known as Hang Thiên Hương and is dedicated to the mother goddess Tran Thi Dung. The sanctuary is located in a cave 60 meters high that has an opening at the top that gives it a special brightness. It is decorated in golden tones that include a large number of motifs and representations of mythological animals.
We walk following ponds with water lilies and lotus flowers and surrounded by rice fields until we reach the Thung Sen Tam Coc restaurant, in a beautiful place surrounded by karst formations. The owners of the establishment take care of this privileged environment and invite visitors to take a walk. Among other things, they have spruced up a small route that climbs up to a viewpoint with good views of the river, the fields, the mountains and the boats that circulate in the area. The whole space is cared for with great care and respect for the natural environment, it is worth the thought to make a good stop there.
From this point we have already climbed the way back while stopping at a curious point on the route where the stretch of navigable river and a cemetery colonized by a herd of goats meet, quite a spectacle.
Right at the entrance to the town of Tam Coc we were also able to stop at a small museum that recovers and preserves some old buildings and allows you to see the traditional architecture of the area.
It is a route that many people do by bicycle, but we really enjoyed being able to walk it calmly, fully enjoying the landscape and the little surprises that the path has brought us. Highly recommended to get away from the hustle and bustle of Tam Coc and the more crowded areas.
