Visit Tāne Mahuta, passing the qualified path of only 150 meters, and observing the giant tree from various points of view.
The road begins at the side of the road especially for this purpose. There, there is an area with public toilets for resting or eating. Before starting the path, many posters (even in several languages) warn of the danger of polluting the kauris (endemic trees of New Zealand) with the dirt of shoes and damaging them with a disease that affects them severely. In order to avoid this, a kind of carp with brushes on the floor has been arranged to rub their shoes, and a couple of sprinklers to cover the sole of the shoes of a disinfectant fluid. Once the carp is abandoned, the path continues through a well-adapted walkway so visitors do not step on the roots of kauris. The road is very short, and in just 150 meters you will reach Tāne Mahuta, the largest known kauri in New Zealand and the world. The first impression leaves anyone in shock, and an informative bill just in front explains the Maori legend on the tree (the God of the Forest), as well as the measures (51.5 meters high, 13.8 meters in perimeter and 244.5 cubic meters of volume) and the estimated age (about 2000 years approximately). The path just turned a bit to see the tree a bit farther and with more perspective. The second impression, then, goes back to surprise.
The return is exactly the same way, so the total distance is about 300 meters without level difference and suitable for everyone. Before leaving, remember to re-clean the shoes, as it must be done before and after entering the forest.
This is a visit rather than a route, although there are other longer routes to the Waipoua Forest that allow visitors to visit other giant kauris, which are remnants of the great kauris forest that had grown on the Northland Peninsula. Anyway, Tāne Mahuta is the largest, and the breath is cut by moments to see it. It is a splendid and spectacular view, and it's worth stopping to contemplate it.
