Itinerary description

Strolling Through Istanbul: The Classic Guide to the City by John Freely is an excellent source to wonder in the city; the guide is easy to follow, leads to some non-touristy sections of the city, and gives references to earlies travellers, ie Evliya Çelebi.

This GPS Track is the combination of the two chapters; it leads to Istanbul's oldest mosques, the maiden's column, the vast Fatih Camii and its premises. This walk is in the relatively newer quarters of the old city, but still a pleasant stroll. The area that this trail passes is the neighbourhood of the immigrants; this means curious scents, a vibrant atmosphere, if a feeling of being at the wrong place! Neverthless, the area is very safe, only the "classic" basic precautions apply.

Those sites are relatively "minor" ones; the highlights of the city are neither of them. So only the ones who have time to spend for the less-significant heritages shall follow this route.

The book, Strolling Through Istanbul is recommended only for the ones who have time for places apart from the holyest-of-the-holy-sites, since it has 20 chapters, each of them requiring a day to wonder. Every Istanbul resident, and long term visitor should get one.
