Itinerary description
The Stations of the Cross (Way of Sorrows or Via Crucis) depicts the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the accompanying prayers. The stations grew out of imitations of the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem, which is a traditional processional route symbolizing the actual path Jesus walked to Mount Calvary. The objective of the stations is to help the Christian faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage through contemplation of the Passion of Christ.
In Trinidad & Tobago I am aware of four such processions: Mt. St. Benedict in St. Augustine, Santa Rosa & Holy Cross in Calvary Hill, Arima, Lopinot in Arouca, and Paramin Hills in Maraval. If you’re aware of others please write to me so that I can update my page. The most challenging, to my mind, is the Stations of the Cross leading the Abbey of Our Lady of Exile, Mt. St. Benedict. This is also the home of the Benedictine monks that live and work in Trinidad & Tobago.
This walk is quite short. I did it on the first Friday of lent (February 24th 2023) but you can do this at any time at your leisure. It starts at the Santa Rosa Roman Catholic Church located at 10.64332°N and -61.28311°W. You’d continue walking north along Woodford Street following all the stations from 1 through to 14. Stage 14 is located at the front of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church on Calvary Hill at 10.64831°N and -61.28546°W.
Regardless of your religious persuasions I find this a deeply interesting trek to do. This is especially true when it’s done with the Catholic procession during Lent. Happy Trails!!!

Easy trail... Not much elevation to worry about... Best done in the early morning or late evening... Little to no canopy cover.
