Split is the second largest city in Croatia, the capital of the Split-Dalmatia region, the main center of Dalmatia. It is located on a small peninsula that enters the Adriatic Sea, at the foot of the Kozjak and Mosor mountains.
This city has the uniqueness of having been built inside, and later in the surroundings, the palace of Diocletian. This Roman emperor, of Dalmatian origin, had an immense palace built on his native coast, from 294 to 305, to spend his retirement there. The seafront is still made up of the palace grounds, where the sea gate still opens, which in ancient times allowed ships to dock directly there. In 615, the palace was transformed into a city when the inhabitants of the neighboring Salona (capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia) took refuge there. They build tall houses taking advantage of the ancient walls and monuments. The mausoleum of Diocletian is transformed into a cathedral dedicated to Saint Domnius, the city's patron saint.
The city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
The main points of interest are:
- Diocletian's Palace and its 4 entrance doors: Golden Gate, Silver Gate, Bronze Gate and Iron Gate.
- Temple of Jupiter
- Mausoleum of Diocletian
- Cathedral of St. Domnius
- Plaza de la República
- People's Square (Narodni Square)
- Seafront
- Marja Forest Park
