Itinerary description

This walking tour attempts to tell the story of Southeast Raleigh through recounting historical places as well as featuring the more current, popular stops. The tour begins at Chavis Park, and makes stops at important historic landmarks such as Shaw University. It then moves towards downtown, where you'll walk along "Black Main Street" and visit black-owned businesses, such as Zen Succulent. Finally, the tour will head towards Oak City Fish and Chips, one of Southeast Raleigh's most popular black-owned restaurants for a delicious meal. I hope you enjoy this tour and learn more about Southeast Raleigh's history, as well as get to explore some new places downtown!

John Chavis Park

John Chavis Memorial Park and Community Center is named after John Chavis, a black preacher, teacher, and war veteran (1762-1838). One of many previously segregated parks in North Carolina, Chavis Park was created in 1937 as a "separate but equal" alternative to nearby Pullen Park. Today, Chavis Park is a beloved part of Southeast Raleigh and is a symbol of resilience within the community. Its facilities include a playground, community center, indoor gym, carousel, outdoor track, and more.

Hamlin Drug Store and Lightner Arcade Hotel

The Hamlin Drug Store was opened by Captain James Edwards Hamlin in 1904, and was located below the Lightner Arcade Hotel. These businesses are located on what was known as "Black Main Street", a business district for the black community of Raleigh. In 1957, In 1957, Clarence C. Coleman and John M. Johnson bought the drug store, and Johnson managed it until the business closed in 2017. The Hamlin Drug Store was the oldest black-owned pharmacy in North Carolina. The Lightner Arcade Hotel was known for its music and dancing, but the building also housed the pharmacy, medical offices, lawyers, and a newspaper. Unfortunately, the Lightner Arcade Hotel building burned down, but luckily the Hamlin Drug Store relocated to a building next door before. Now in its place is the GoRaleigh Station.

Zen Succulent

Zen Succulent is one of Downtown Raleigh's black-owned businesses, run by mother and daughter Margaret and Megan George. They sell a variety of plants and terrariums, as well as offer classes and workshops. They also offer home and beauty-related products.

Black Friday Market

Another black-owned business, Black Friday Market is a retail store that sells products from other smaller, local businesses, artists, and entrepreneurs. They also host events such as shop-a-thon, Small Business Saturday, and the Sunday Black Flea Market.

Oak City Fish and Chips, located in Morgan Street Food Hall, is owned by Isaac B. Horton IV, a Raleigh native. Their custom spice blend is what makes their seafood so amazing.

Shaw University

Shaw University, founded in 1865, is located in Southeast Raleigh, and was the first historically black institution of higher education in the South, making it one of the oldest in the nation. It was also the first historically black college to open its doors to women. It's a small, private, liberal arts college with about 1800 students, and they offer 30+ degree programs.

Harris Barber College

Harris Barber College opened in 1930 by Samuel Harris, and it focuses on training students on the skills and techniques necessary so they can become a barber. Harris opened the college because he believed that young African Americans should possess skills, such as this, that would improve their economic status. This business was originally located in the Lightner Arcade, and moved to its current location in 1942.
