Sfântu Gheorghe (in Hungarian Sepsiszentgyörgy, in German Sankt Georgen) is a municipality of Romania of 61,704 inhabitants, the capital of the district of Covasna, in the historical region of Transylvania.
The localities of Chilieni and Coșeni are also part of the administrative area.
The population consists of 75% of people of Székely origin and Hungarian speakers.
While the Romanian minority is predominantly Orthodox, the majority of Magyar ethnicity profess the Evangelical Christian religion (Calvinism) and the Roman Catholic one.
Sfântu Gheorghe is one of the oldest cities in Transylvania, the existence of which has been documented since 1332. While part of the Kingdom of Hungary, the city was an economic and administrative center of the Háromszék committee, territory today divided between the district of Covasna and that of Brasov.
The economic development of Sfântu Gheorghe began in the second half of the 19th century, with the start-up of businesses in the textile and cigarette manufacturing sectors. The city became part of Romania after the First World War. During the Second World War it returned to Hungary and then to Romania at the end of the same.
