Cluj-Napoca is the third largest city in Romania, and the main economic center of the north-west of the country. But it is also very interesting to visit.
Cluj Napoca, a city founded on the banks of the Somesul Mic River, in Transylvania, is one of the most important academic, cultural and industrial centers in Romania. Cluj Napoca's centuries-old multiculturalism is evident in its architecture, culture and gastronomy. Founded in the 2nd century AD by the Romans, the city is surrounded by hills. The main square is overlooked by Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance and Neoclassical buildings built between the 18th and 19th centuries. The church of San Michele is very beautiful, one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in the country, built between 1350 and 1487, and the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania is worth a visit. Since the end of the eighteenth century Cluj Napoca has been the capital of Transylvania and today it is a modern city with more than three hundred thousand inhabitants and one of the liveliest Romanian cities also thanks to the numerous presence of night clubs and discos. Cluj is located about 480 kilometers northwest of Bucharest.
There are several attractions to visit in Cluj-Napoca. Here are the main ones, so you don't miss a single one. Bulevardul Regele Ferdinand Strada Regele Ferdinand, Cluj-Napoca, Romania The beautiful boulevard Bulevardul Regele Ferdinand, once called Strada podului and now named after King Ferdinand I, is one of the city's shopping streets. Numerous elegant palaces built between the 18th and 19th centuries overlook it, including the Berde, Babos, Elian, Urania and Szeky palaces, built in a mix of styles between Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance. Also interesting is a set of buildings on the corner with the bridge over the Somesul Mic river, built in the last decade of the 19th century. Piața Unirii Piața Unirii, Cluj-Napoca, Romania The wide Piața Unirii, in English union square, is the largest and most important square in Cluj-Napoca. It is at the same time one of the largest squares in all of Romania, with its 220 meters long and 160 wide. It is here that the city center begins, and it is always here that the church of San Michele overlooks, with the tallest bell tower in all of Romania, a good 80 meters. The church was built starting in 1316, and the works lasted until 1487. Other important city landmarks facing Piața Unirii are the old town hall, the national art museum, the Josika palace and the statue of the king of Hungary Matthias Corvinus. Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption Piața Avram Iancu, Cluj-Napoca, Romania (Website) This marvelous cathedral, consecrated in 1933, is the most important Orthodox church in the city of Cluj-Napoca. It was built in the Brâncoveanu style, the typical style of Romanian monasteries and religious buildings that developed in the early 1700s in Wallachia. The main dome of the cathedral is inspired by the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, and is surrounded by 4 towers; the 18 large columns that support the dome are carved in stone, extracted from the nearby towns of Baciu and Bompotoc. Inside, the wonderful frescoes were painted between 1928 and 1933 by art academy professors Anastasie Demian and Catul Bogdan. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption It is located in Avram Iancu Square, where you can also admire the National Theater of Cluj-Napoca and the statue of Avram Iancu. Lucian Blaga National Theater Piața Ștefan cel Mare 2-4, Cluj-Napoca 400000, Romania (Website) The Teatrul Naţional Lucian Blaga in Cluj-Napoca is one of the most important institutions of its kind in all of Romania. It was built in the neo-baroque style in the early 1900s to a design by Austrian architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, who also designed similar buildings in Iasi, Oradea and Timisoara. The inauguration of the theater took place on 8 September 1906, with the representation of Bujdosòk by Ferenc Herczeg; until 1919, as Cluj was part of the Kingdom of Hungary, it was the seat of the Hungarian National Theater. The beautiful internal room has a capacity of 928 seats, and since 2011 the director of the theater is Mihai Maniutiu; the main representations that are put on display are original works, of both classical and modern inspiration. Parcul Central Parcul Central, Cluj-Napoca, Romania Parcul Central is the main green lung of the center of Cluj-Napoca. It represents the perfect opportunity to escape the chaos of the city and enjoy a few hours of tranquillity, strolling along the tree-lined avenues and relaxing in one of the outdoor cafés. The park, which underwent extensive restoration in 2012, was established in the 19th century and is located on the south bank of the Somesul Mic River. It houses the University of Arts and Design and the Faculty of Chemistry of Babes-Bolyai University. Inside the park there is also the old casino of Cluj-Napoca, also restored in 2012, with its elegant architecture adorned with statues and the dark sheet metal roof. - https://www.romaniaturismo.it/transilvania/cluj-napoca/
