Itinerary description
Sintra is a town and municipality in the Greater Lisbon region of Portugal. Sintra is a major tourist destination in Portugal, famed for its picturesqueness and for its numerous historic palaces and castles. The historic center of the Vila de Sintra is famous for its 19th-century Romanticist architecture, historic estates & villas, gardens, and numerous royal palaces & castles, which resulted in the classification of the town and its historic passage as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sintra's landmarks include the mediaeval Castle of the Moors, the romanticist Pena National Palace and the Portuguese Renaissance Sintra National Palace.
This walking route starts near the rail station with the first point of interest being the Palácio Nacional de Sintra. Its a short walk to Quinta Da Regaleira passing the Cascata Dos Pisões. Quinta da Regaleira located near the historic center of Sintra, Portugal is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the "Cultural Landscape of Sintra". The property consists of a Romantic palace and chapel, and a luxurious park that features lakes, grottoes, wells, benches, fountains, and a vast array of exquisite constructions. The palace is also known as "The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire", which is based on the nickname of its best known former owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. The palace was designed by the italian architect Luigi Manini. The construction of the current estate commenced in 1904 and much of it was completed by 1910.
On leaving Quinta Da Regaleira the route goes to Castelo Dos Mouros. It was closed when I arrived due to the time spent at the Quinta. The route returns to Sintra via the Mata de Sintra viewpoint to the train station
