Itinerary description
This World Heritage site is sure to be memorable for many visitors to Shenyang and China in general. It is more intimate and authentic than other similar sites in Beijing. There is additional information on the individual waypoint descriptions, and on a photo of an English-language information poster.
The total track distance includes taxi, so actual walking distance is shorter. There are many additional sections and pathways to be explored, that are not on the saved track.
I did this walk with private guide "Euping", who joined me at breakfast and accompanied me by taxi to the entrance at the south end of Park, and then helped with the local admission fee. During our tour, he shared his historic knowledge of the site and surrounding area, which was invaluable, and I greatly appreciated his high-quality photography of our walk around the site, and his company and guidance afterwards during an evening in Shenyang.
Waypoints
Entrance to Zhaoling Tomb Park, start of walk
Pay Admission fee and enter the wide approaches route, heading north.
The large boating lake
There is a family-oriented peddle boat lake, a unique China experience. Snack and refreshment stands. Sunscreen may be advisable on the water, Shenyang can provide blue skies and nice cloudscapes, contrary to popular perceptions (not always).
Along road to Zhaoling Tomb
The historic items along the wayside are authentic period pieces, with both English and Chinese descriptions. Ancient gates, pavement stones, and pavillions appear to be original, some propped up.
Approaches to inner courtyards
Ancient gates, pavilions, and murals. Statues commemorate events from the time of the Emperor.
Path around Zhaoling Tomb
The tomb is said to be untouched, under a high grassy earthen mound with an ancient tree at its summit. One tunneller is said to have gotten in long ago, but got caught and suffered the expected consequence.
