NOTICE: It is understood that anyone who wants to do this same route assumes the responsibility that an activity entails that is not exempt from possible risks or incidents, in an environment in which common sense and circumstances can make the difference between having a good day or the opposite.
We have just arrived at Denali National Park, after traversing the more than one hundred and forty miles of dirt track, which from the McLaren approaches this jewel of Alaska. Although it would rather be said “great jewel”, since between this park and the neighbor of St. Elias they occupy the same surface as our entire country. The truth is that they have it well set up to preserve this spectacular environment in perfect condition, in which its great heart of almost 6,200 m beats strongly. altitude or Mt. McKinley. He said that they have it well planned, since the Denali can only be accessed with authorization and never by private motor vehicle. Yes, it can be done by bike, on foot or running (some machaca can be seen doing it that way), or with the sutle that leaves every day from the Visitor Center at the entrance to the park. Private cars can only do the first fourteen miles, before coming across a very American ranger shack and the road, which goes from asphalt to dirt. We have done that permitted section of asphalt and we have approached the Savage River Loop camping area. The short trek begins in the same car park, after heading towards the Wild River, after leaving the restrooms on the right, and after five minutes passing through an area set up for a picnic. This recreation area is also on our right and the clear path we are on tends to head south towards the mountains in front of us. The countryside at this time of year is spectacular, without ever becoming dry, quite the contrary due to its greenery and the large number of mushrooms, it seems like an early autumn, which warns that the short summer is about to end. The abundant deciduous trees are also beginning to turn yellow, which is true of what we have been told here, in that summer does not last much more than a month, and spring and autumn together last as long as the summer. In this area of Denali it is perfectly observed that the taiga and the tundra come together and their vegetation is interspersed, with a large number of birch trees, dwarf willows and different types of fir trees. Arriving at the Savage River, in just under half an hour, turn right to take a path that heads north, getting closer and closer to the camping and caravan area. This is left behind very soon to end up going out to the intersection at the beginning and returning through the picnic area, from which to the car park there is only another five minutes left. Just to comment, that if until now and in the different areas of Alaska through which we have passed, all the indications of the information panels had to be heeded, here we are in the middle of an area of grizzly and moose (the latter, if possible , even more dangerous than plantigrades), and for this reason all recommendations must be strictly adhered to, avoiding above all going off the beaten track and remaining isolated from the group.
