Ruta del Castillo Arabe, Olvera
This route goes up to the La Villa neighbourhood which was the old Arab town. It has the castle, the Plaza de la Iglesia (where there once was a mosque), and La Cilla.
The castle was built in the 12th century and formed part of the defences of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada.
The castle is the highest point of Olvera at 623m above sea level.
Opposite the castle is the church of Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion. It is a neo-classical church built in 1841.
La Cilla is nestled in-between the castle and the church, opposite the Olvera Sign and sculpture. It was originally a granary, but now it houses the tourist office and museum.
Next to the castle and La Cilla is the old Olvera cemetery.
From here you make your way to the Torre del Pan, a tower (now it has a house attached) which was part of the Muslim town’s defensive walls and which was later used as a Tahona, and Arab bread oven.
There is a decking walkway around the tower.
Heading back through La Villa’s narrow streets you make your way down to Plaza Andalucía, which goes up to the Sacred Heart Garden.
From here head back down Calle Calvario to the starting point, and stopping off at La Gloria bakery for coffee and cake.
