Itinerary description
Ruta del Azahar
A very pretty, easy, short route from Melegis, starting from Hotel Los Naranjos and returning there about an hour and a quarter later for a drink and a tapa.
Head off up along the narrow village street to the right of the hotel parking area and quickly you are out amongst the citrus groves, walking between trees laden with oranges and lemons (azahar means orange blossom). At the most northerly point you turn left to follow Río Durcal (no crossings necessary!), then swing round to cross it on a road bridge, from which you can see the riverside track that you want off to the right. Go beyond the bridge, then take the track sharply down on the left hand side and cross under the bridge to join the footpath.
You now follow Río Ízbor as far as the first glimpse of the big lake (Embalse de Béznar), which will make you want to do the lakeside walk “Melegis and Embalse”.
After crossing a small bridge to avoid the ford, the final climb up a footpath takes you back to the main road, and the hotel is to your left for a very welcome drink and a tapa.
