Târgu Mureș is the main city of the Mureș district, in Romania. It is located in the Transylvania region and during the 16th century it was one of the main cities of Romania.
The city was documented for the first time in 1332. In 1405, Sigismund of Luxembourg gave the city the right to organize fairs and markets, and in 1482 King Matthias Corvino of Hungary declared it a royal residence.
Târgu Mureș is nestled within the Transylvania region, with the Eastern Carpathians and the Mures River to the east and the city of Cluj Napuca a little further west.
Târgu Mureș reflects the features of Hungarian influence over many centuries, especially in the architecture and many faithfully preserved traditions. Marosvásárhely is the Hungarian name that the city had, and Neumarkt am Mieresch the German, which reflects, just like the word "Târgu Mureş" (Mures market), the main economic activity and commercial character of the city.
Capital of the area with the ethnic Hungarian majority, it is a city of refined details. Although in decline after the arrival of communism, it still preserves different public buildings such as the charming Palace of Culture or the Town Hall itself, a delight for the eyes.
