Biertan is a commune located in central Romania north of the Sibiu district in the Transylvania region. Biertan is the largest of the so-called Saxon villages with fortified churches in Transylvania and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.
The first documentary testimony of this population dates from a text of 1283 on the tributes paid by the inhabitants of the so-called seven towns; Therefore, it is believed that it was founded between 1224, the date of the Golden Bull of Andrew II, and 1283 by the Saxons of Transylvania.
The so-called Saxon towns of this area of Transylvania, unpopulated since Roman times, were the result of the settlement of settlers from northwest Germany, called by the kings of Hungary, with the purpose of defending the eastern border of this kingdom and for its defense they raised in the populations churches of fortified character.
Between 1468 and the 16th century, a small fortified church was built. The city declined in importance at the end of the medieval period, due to the push of the neighboring cities of Sighişoara, Sibiu and Mediaş
Currently the commune has a population of approximately 3,000 people and the town of Biertan 1,600 people, being one of the most visited places in Transylvania and the seat of the annual meeting of the Transylvanian Saxons.
As a curiosity, to go up to the church it is accessed by closed wooden stairs and in the church there is a door with 17 locks and a single key, very well preserved.
Also note that there are several walls
