Itinerary description
If you are just arriving in Ronda, you can make the most of the journey between the Ronda train station and your accommodation in the old town by taking this route along the Tajo gorge. It's a great way to get a feel for the possibilities for future walks in the city of Ronda, walks in the gorge below, and walks in the surrounding mountains. From the mirador, there are excellent views of the Serranía de Ronda including the mountains that rise near Benaoján and Montejaque. If you are lucky, there may be a musician playing at the mirador while you are there. We enjoyed listening to a woman playing the harp.
Walk 1 on a long-distance walking trip in the Serranía de Ronda
From our journal:
Leaving Atocha Station during pre-dawn hours this morning, we zipped along at 200 kilometers per hour and arrived in Ronda in time for a quick walk along the Tajo before lunch at a tapas restaurant. Our favorite part of the day was remembering the first time we saw the view from the mirador ten years ago with Miguel Ángel, one of the organizers of the TransAndalus mountain bike route. He pointed out the track below that we would soon be cycling. We owe our love of Andalucia to the TA volunteers who introduced us to the mountains and wild areas of their region through this project.
Our apartment at La Colgata is straight out of the 19th century with carved wooden doors, and the church of Santa María la Mayor so close it seems like you could reach out the window and touch it.
Possibilities for eating/sleeping:
Apartamentos La Colegiata - Plaza de la Duquesa de Parcent, next to the Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor. The apartments are close to the starting point for numerous trails starting from Ronda. The owner is helpful with maps and questions.
La Tragata, C/ Nueva 4, near Puente Nuevo - for tacos
Casa María, Ruedo Alameda 27, Barrio San Francisco - for a meal after walking
Resources:
Book: The Sierras of the South: Travels in the Mountains of Andalusia by Alaistair Boyd tells the story of his years in Ronda in the 1960's, including living in the Palacio Mondragón. Alastair Boyd's books are out of print, but used copies of his journals of traveling on horseback through the area during the last century are available.
Next walk: Pilar de Cartajima - Acueducto Romano
