Itinerary description

Ponta Delgada is the capital of the island of São Miguel and one of the most important cities in the Azores, along with Angra do Heroísmo and Horta, as well as being the gateway to the archipelago through the Juan Pablo II international airport. Located in a large bay, Ponta Delgada has a beautiful old town with cobbled streets and a very interesting architectural heritage of elegant buildings from the 12th and 18th centuries, as well as beautiful monuments.
In the past it was a small fishing village until in 1522 it became the capital of São Miguel after the earthquake that almost completely destroyed what was the capital of the island: Vila Franca do Campo.
The 18th century was a golden century for the economy of the island of São Miguel, with the great epics of international trade that linked the Azores archipelago with England and Flanders, and the heyday of orange exports. Thanks to which it was possible to build beautiful baroque buildings and monuments that stand out in the architectural heritage of Ponta Delgada.
