If there is a city that represents what was the Venetian past of the Slovenian coast, that is Piran. Although there are no channels, the facades of the houses sound, in many aspects and details, to the capital of the Serenissima Republic, although it does not detract from their visit either. Also the language spoken, apart from Slovenian, is Italian. That is, a city that contrasts with the interior, more similar to Austria.
A curiosity: Forget the car and the traffic jams. In Piran, the vehicle is prohibited, except for residents, although to get off there is a bus that is free. A detail when entering Piran: EYE WITH THE SOIL. The paving is somewhat irregular.
The atmosphere is of the most Mediterranean, although unlike many tourist coastal places, where beaches or coves abound, in Piran they do not have sandy areas. In fact, the beaches are basically cement and the water reaches the rocks.
The food is very good, although do not expect a meat grill. Fish is king, as are cephalopods (stuffed squid is very good). And the ambientillo that is formed in the restaurants is excellent, especially in the summer.
In short, the Slovenian coast, although it is not long (in that Croatia surpasses him), maintains the charm of the Serenissima Venice (although without the crowds), which gives a Mediterranean charm to a Slavic-speaking country.
You can also visit the coastal area of Istria, already in the Republic of Croatia, highlighting Pula and its Roman ruins.
NOTES (IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A ONE-DAY EXCURSION TO CROATIA)
-Croatia belongs to the European Union, but not to the euro. Check the currency exchange.
- Nor does it belong fully to the Schengen area, so the DNI is essential.
