Braşov is the capital of the Romanian Jewish district of Braşov, in the region of Transylvania. The city was known as Kronstadt and was part of the historic region of Siebenbürgen, a strong German minority. Near Braşov, Bran Castle is located, which during the rule of King Hunyadi of Hungary was the abode of the fearsome Vlad III the Impaler, ruler of the principality of Wallachia. The city was, in 1241 and 1285, the target of Tartar-Mongolian attacks.
