Itinerary description

The track to One Tree Hill forms part of the Canberra Centenary Trail. The Canberra Centenary Trail is “a 145-kilometre self-guided, non-motorised loop trail for walkers and touring cyclists” – see the link for this track. The One Tree Hill walk is one of the “shorter walks” that is described nearer the bottom of the web page.

The One Tree Hill part of the track is very busy – especially on a weekend with perfect weather. So walking can feel slightly like being on a busy street at times. There are bicyclists so you also need to be aware of this – although they don’t typically use the last part of the track that has steps etc.

The track starts in Hall, which is an ex-NSW village that became part of the ACT when the ACT was formed. Hall can also be busy on the weekend, so parking is at a premium. Hall itself has a number of shops and places to eat or have a drink, so you can incorporate this into your walk if desired.

The track is very well signposted, just follow the well work path. At the point that the One Tree Hill part of the track deviates from the Centenary Trail it becomes slight narrower and there are also steps as it climbs up the hill.

One of the interesting aspects of this walk is that you start in what looks like rural countryside, and then you suddenly get to see all the new suburbs that are being built in the northern part of the ACT. In fact the new suburbs go right up to the ACT/NSW border. As the track gets close to One Tree Hill the track is right next to the border – which is a hinged joint fence, just like most other rural farming fences. There are great views into NSW and across the ACT from One Tree Hill (a name that does not accurately describe the hill at all).

Parking is where ever you can find it on the side of the road near where the track starts. There is an official parking area – however, this is completely insufficient for the number of walkers. There is plenty of street spaces so that is OK.
