We continue the day of 28 February 2023 by visiting the rural village of Ma Tra, in the Sapa region, an old mountain station from the French colonial period.
It is an area very close to the Chinese border and therefore the presence of ethnic minorities of Chinese origin is significant.
excerpt from wikipedia
Located five kilometers southeast of Sapa town, Ma Tra village has recently been added to the growing list of wonderful destinations in the Sapa area. The village is home to the H'mong and Red Zao ethnicities and boasts only about 50 houses. Travelers who prefer a less commercial track and want to explore Vietnam's ethnic mountain life will appreciate the spectacular village landscapes and exotic lifestyle when they come to Ma Tra. Here, the locals survive by weaving brocade, silk, forging agricultural tools, carving silver and other traditional crafts.
The borough also has an artistic troupe, including folk craftsmen and those with expert knowledge of the locality's history, customs and tourist attractions. The entire Sapa district is dominated by the Hoang Lien Son mountain range which boasts the highest mountain in Vietnam, Fansipan, at a height of 3,142 meters above sea level. By following the main road from Sapa to Lao Cai for 4 km, you can enjoy the panoramic view of the whole valley, which stretches for about 12 km with some low hills in the middle to divide the valley into two parts. The part closest to the road is the Ma Tra village area, and the furthest part is Ta Phin village. Although faster and better routes have been established over time, many still prefer to follow the trail that runs at high altitudes around the valley for a real life discovery. This has increased the appreciation of the valley and Ma Tra village in particular.
Villagers generally only weave and create handicrafts for their own personal consumption. Recently, as the visitors to the village continue to grow, they are starting to increase their production and sell some of their wares on the main streets of the town.
Some travelers also choose to spend the night in the area by doing homestays. This is a great way to interact with ethnic people.
