Lienzer Spaziergang

Why worthwhile? Short walk to get to know the town a bit better.

Starting point: Several options, this trip starts at a parking lot near the Dolomitenstadion in Lienz [Lienz 680m. – Ost-Tirol].

Total time: 1 – 1¼ hour.

Difficulties: ‘Spaziergang’ through the town, yet one small short piece across a forest path.

Route description:

We park the car near the Dolomitenstadion; this parking lot was free parking at the time (summer 2005). From here we go to the T-section with the Tiroler Strasse via the Amlacher Strasse, going underneath the railroad tracks via a tunnel. We cross this T-section and follow the road. Keep to the right (Mühlgasse). At the Information Centre we go left to the Hauptplatz (market square).

Once on the Hauptplatz we go right and at the end we follow the Kärntner Strasse left (at the church Hl. Antonius). At the small ‘arena’, cross straight through until you reach the river bank of the river the Isel. Left here, and then cross the Isel (Spitalsbrücke). Next right again following the Kärntner Strasse. After about 5 minutes we come to the oldest painted ‘bildstock’ in Tirol.
Now we walk back a bit first until we reach the fork in the road with the Grafendorfer Strasse. Right here and take the first street left. Keep following this road (Beda-Weber-Gasse).

Passing Michaels Platz we walk on until we reach the fork in the road with the Patriasdorfer Strasse. Straight on and then keep right (Pfarr Gasse). Here we can go on to a small footpath that leads behind the HTL school (“Poetenstieg”). Descending to the left Iselweg via a small forest we walk back to the main road where we take the bridge (Pfarrbrücke) to cross the Isel again.

Once across the bridge, go straight on for a bit and then keep to the left (Schweizergasse). Walk through this street and we end up on the Egger-Lienz-Platz. Cross this and then via the Muchargasse we reach the Hauptplatz again. From here on, the same part back to the parking lot in reversed order.
