The city of Lancaster is located between the Lake District National Park to the north, the Yorkshire Dales National Park to the northeast, and the moors of the Bowland Forest to the southeast. It has a population of 45,000 inhabitants, a very quiet city with a very interesting history.
Lancaster was founded in Roman times, and its name is the same as the river that bathes it. It is part of the traditional cities of his county, Lancashire. He played a key role in the slave trade of the 18th century, along with Bristol and Liverpool, and most of the city is adorned with Georgian architecture.
The main attraction of the city is Lancaster Castle. It was built in 1150 on the remains of the ancient Roman fortifications, and was owned by the Duke of Lancaster. When the second Duke, Juan de Gaunt, died in 1399, King Richard II seized the castle. Anyway, the son of John de Gaunt, deposed Ricardo, and became King Henry IV. Since then, Lancaster Castle has belonged to the British monarchy.
The castle served as a prison since 1196, and dungeons can be visited today. It was also the place chosen for the hunting of witches and heretics of the English crown, when in 1612 they hanged in their towers ten men and ten women condemned for witchcraft. We must also visit the Convent of Santa María Church, annex to the castle.
Lancaster has some notable museums, such as the Maritime Museum, the City Museum, the Justice Museum and the House Museum. Lancaster is also a good starting point to visit Morecambe or Heysham, a few miles west, picturesque villages of great beauty.
