Itinerary description

Internationally significant to birds migrating along the Pacific flyway. In an estuary with ponds, natural tidal marshes, and sloughs. This visit in early January when hawks, owls, eagles, sparrows, chickadees, other song birds, woodpeckers, various duck, coots, herons, and cranes can be seen. There are several professional bird viewing blinds in ideal viewing spots. There is a warming shack with view windows overlooking a large pond , and with a wood stove, located just inside the admission wicket.

Trails are muddy in places, ponds mostly iced over. Dicks can frequently be seen coming in for long controlled landings across the smooth ice. Parking-lot is overflowing on a sunny early-January day. Gift shop has local walking-hiking books, and all kinds of bird things. $5 admission.

The approach by car from Ladner and through Westham Island is quaint with house boats, an old wooden one-lane bridge, a fruit winery, and other farm-produce stops in season.

Inside Entrance Gate

$5 admission. Bird sighting list for the week and the day logbook are posted in window of, and besides the entrance building. Lots of bird feeding activity just inside the park gate. The Sandhill Cranes are wintering around the entrance buildings and walking over the ice. Herons seen nesting in trees near here. Bald Eagle perched on top of tallest tree. A bright warming hut has a nice wood wood fire and reading tables.

NE corner of trail network

A couple of well constructed bird viewing blinds look over wetlands. Wood ducks are plentiful. A woodpecker seen. Many of the walkers are birders and have large telephoto cameras to match their interest.

Viewing Tower

Two level staircase climb offers good views around the park, to the mountains north of Vancouver, across Georgia Straight to The Gulf Islands & Vancouver Island, and south to the Point Roberts shipping terminal and into the USA.

interior trails

Extend walking distance by wandering these sinuous trails in the middle of the park. Easy to get turned around without GPS and trail map.

outer dike trail

This trail segment goes around the outer perimeter of the park and is relatively secluded. It has a low viewing platform looking to the west and southwest over salt marshlands to the Gulf of Georgia and Roberts Bank.
