Itinerary description
This not a real trail, it's only a suggestion for a stop in that area and have a look at these nature beauties.
Komolithi or Sand Dunes is a geological phenomenon in the west side of Crete, about 35 km away from Chania city. They are located in the area of Potamida in the Kissamos Providence. The strange-shaped dunes were created due to erosion of underlying soft clay soils over hundreds and hundreds of years. These earth pyramids, referred to as the Greek Cappadocia, form one of the strangest and most interesting landscapes in Crete.
They located just a few meters from the village houses on a very fertile lowland piece of land and this is what makes it special because it stands out above the fields of the plain. Small and larger meteors are created completely bare of vegetation on the sides but with bushes on their tops creating a strong contrast. Climbing and hiking among the Komolithos is easy.
